About English-W231

English-W231 Professional Writing is a class at IUPUI offered by the School of Liberal Arts. In this course, groups of students partner with local businesses or charities in the community, and focus on creating recommendations to better the organization that they collaborated with. Professional Writing students conduct primary and secondary research, and analyze business practices. The work conducted by W231 groups provides community service experience to the students. All the hard work done by each group is of no cost to the organization, and issues a beneficial experience to each student.

More About Professional Writing

Professional Writing is a group focused class that revolves around a semester long team project. More information about the class includes:

  • Over forty sections of W231 are offered each year, with over 1,000 students enrolled in the class.

  • Each class consists of multiple groups of 4-6 students.

These students work together throughout the semester for the success of the team. The importance of this class is not only the grade, but to help better the community as well.

Our group worked rigorously on different aspects of the project including:

  • Secondary Research Literature Review

  • Interview with Mars Hill Charity Riders

  • Primary Research Survey

  • Retrieving Survey Results from Local Organizations

Organizations contacted for input on our project:

  • Eli Lilly and Company Foundation

  • Roche Diagnostics

  • Anthem, Inc.

  • Indy Reads Books, Flanner House/ Ujamaa Community Bookstore, Indiana Youth Group, Tinker Coffee Co., Three Dog Bakery, Silver in the City, Global Gifts, The Garden Table, Goose the Market, The Best Chocolate in Town, Dreyer Honda South dealership, Shapiro’s Delicatessen, and Simon Property Group.
